Christmas Gifts Sent to Haiti Orphanage

  • Print
During the months of November and December, Clay HS students brought in over 500 items to donate to an orphanage in Jeremie, Haiti. These items included clothing, shoes, nail polish, towels, school supplies, Matchbox cars, soap, shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and other small toys.

The orphanage in Jeremie, Haiti is called the Haiti Gospel Mission and is run by a woman by the name of Yvrose Pierre. She has over 70 abandoned or orphaned children ranging from 1-year old to 23 years old. Some of the children have disabilities as well. These children have never had a Christmas celebration or ever been given their own Christmas present as their main concern is making sure there is food on the table each day.

On December 23, Miss Cleland traveled to the orphanage to visit the children and help bring them Christmas. She took many of the items the CHS students had donated (some will go in the summer due to the embargo); and on Christmas Eve, she spent six hours wrapping presents and playing Santa Claus. On Christmas morning, every child at the orphanage received his or her very own wrapped Christmas present with both necessities and toys.

All the children were very grateful, and they sent this message back to CHS: "Mesi ou zanmi en Etazini." (Translated: Thank you, our friends in the United States)

According to Miss Cleland, it was really cool to see CHS students rally around children from a third-world country they've never met and bring them their very first Christmas. From Miss Cleland and the orphans at the Haiti Gospel Mission, we thank everyone that donated resources to make this trip successful.
